Description

Lutalyse Injection

Reproductive Management Support for Horses, Cattle, and Swine

Lutalyse is a ready-to-use prostaglandin injection made with dinoprost tromethamine, a naturally occurring prostaglandin used in livestock and equine reproduction programs. It is widely used for estrus synchronization, heat detection support, parturition induction in swine, and controlling the timing of estrus in mares. Each mL contains the equivalent of 5 mg dinoprost, and the product is supplied in 30 mL and 100 mL bottles.

What Is Lutalyse Used For?

Lutalyse® is indicated for different reproductive uses depending on species.

In Cattle

Lutalyse is used for:

  • estrus synchronization in beef and dairy cattle
  • treatment of unobserved or silent estrus
  • treatment of pyometra (chronic endometritis)
  • certain abortion protocols in non-lactating cattle
  • use in specific synchronization protocols with FACTREL® and EAZI-BREED™ CIDR® inserts in labeled cattle programs

In Swine

Lutalyse® is indicated for parturition induction in swine, typically when administered within 3 days of the normal predicted farrowing date. The average interval from administration to parturition is approximately 30 hours.

In Mares

For horses, Lutalyse® is indicated for:

  • controlling the timing of estrus in estrous cycling mares
  • managing clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum
  • difficult-to-breed mares where luteolysis is needed to return the mare to estrus

Lutalyse for Horses

What Does Lutalyse Do in Mares?

In mares, Lutalyse® works through its luteolytic effect, which means it helps regress the corpus luteum. As a result, mares that are treated during diestrus commonly return to estrus within 2 to 4 days and typically ovulate 8 to 12 days after treatment. This makes it useful for breeding management and for scheduling stallion use more efficiently.

Lutalyse for Difficult-to-Breed Mares

Some mares that appear anestrous during the breeding season may actually have a functional corpus luteum. In these mares, Lutalyse® may help restart a more usable reproductive cycle by inducing luteolysis and encouraging a return to estrus.

Lutalyse Horse Injection Dose

Basic Mare Dosage

For mares, the labeled dosage is 1 mg per 100 lb body weight, which is usually 1 mL to 2 mL intramuscularly, depending on the mare’s size.

Important Dosing Note

Because Lutalyse® is used across multiple species and reproductive programs, dosage and timing should always be confirmed with your veterinarian. This is especially important when using it in synchronized breeding programs or when pregnancy status is uncertain.

How Long Does Lutalyse Take to Work?

The timing depends on the species and treatment goal:

  • Mares: often return to estrus in 2–4 days, with ovulation commonly occurring 8–12 days later
  • Swine: parturition may occur about 30 hours after administration when used within the labeled timing window
  • Cattle: reproductive response depends on the synchronization program and whether the animal has a responsive corpus luteum
